Although automakers are relentlessly pushing for higher performance and fuel economy, much of the innovation happening in the automotive industry is in the form of connectivity and infotainment. One of the recent developments in the tech world has been the smart watch. Mercedes-Benz is about to combine the two with a smart watch app.
The Mercedes-Benz smart watch app will be shown at the company’s exhibit at the 2014 Consumer Electronics Show in January. Developed in conjunction with Pebble Technology, one of the leading smart watch manufacturers, the Mercedes-Benz Digital DriveStyle app changes modes depending on the driver’s location either inside or away from the car.
When outside of their vehicle, the app will display vital info such as fuel level, door-lock status, vehicle location and other information. When driving, the watch switches modes to give the driver a vibratory alert for real-time hazards such as accidents, road construction, or stalled vehicles. Drivers can also customize Digital DriveStyle features such as hazard reporting, auto-routing, Siri activation, media remote control or traffic conditions.
Almost all the major automakers now have a Silicon Valley office, but Mercedes-Benz claims to have been the first manufacturer to open a Silicon Valley research and development office more than 20 years ago.
