Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe Concept Looks Ready for Production in Shanghai

Mercedes will soon have a competitor for the BMW X4.

Mercedes-Benz is hard at work filling all the gaps in its lineup, and crossovers are a big part of the story. This new concept, being shown at the Shanghai auto show, is a thinly veiled version of the upcoming Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe.

The GLC Coupe is a more style-oriented variant of the upcoming Mercedes-Benz GLC, which will replace the existing GLK compact luxury crossover as part of the brand's new naming scheme. Much like the BMW X3 and X4, the GLC and GLC coupe are variations on the same platform, sharing powertrains, interior appointments, and basic design cues. The GLC Coupe concept's exterior styling is reminiscent of the recently revealed GLE Coupe, with its corporate Mercedes-Benz grille up front, accentuated wheel arches, and steeply raked rear hatch that slopes down toward a stubby rear decklid. Only a few wild concept-car touches are included, like the large 21-inch wheels and quad exhaust pipes.

Compared to the Mercedes-Benz GLC crossover we've spied testing, this coupe looks to have much less space for passengers and cargo compared with its conventional counterpart that displays a more traditional, upright greenhouse. The two crossovers will likely share most interior components, and will crib the overall dashboard design from the Mercedes-Benz C-Class sedan.

The Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe concept's powertrain is certainly production-ready, as it uses the same 3.0-liter twin-turbo V-6 from the C450 AMG 4Matic. In this application, it makes 367 hp and 384 lb-ft of torque, pairing with the company's new nine-speed automatic transmission and 4Matic all-wheel drive. Expect the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder from the C300 to be included as well, along with the inevitable GLC AMG high-performance variants.

At this point, the Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe is a sure bet for production, so look for this new model to debut in production form later this year around the same time we see the GLC, possibly at the Frankfurt auto show in the fall. Until then, see the gallery below for more photos of the Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe concept premiering at the Shanghai auto show.
