Close your eyes for a second and picture the HUMMER H2 SUT, the four-door, pickup-like monstrosity that died in 2009. Now make it crazier-looking, then add horsepower. Now add two more wheels. And add a level of off-road capability the H2 could only dream about. Open your eyes and take a look: Mercedes-Benz’s AMG division just made that vehicle, the incredible G63 AMG 6×6.
We shouldn’t have been surprised that something like this would happen: each and every G-Class is hand-built at Magna Steyr in Austria, which means that these modifications would be easier than trying to do the same to, say, an M-Class (which is assembled on a line in Tuscaloosa, Alabama). Further, Mercedes-Benz had already developed a 6×6 G-Class frame as part of a 2011 order from the Australian army.
Those military-spec G-Class 6x6s utilize a 3.0-liter turbo-diesel V-6. The G63 AMG, however, most certainly does not. Like any of its pedestrian G63 AMG siblings, the G63 AMG 6×6 uses a twin-turbocharged, 5.5-liter V-8 engine that makes 536 hp and 560 lb-ft of torque. That power is sent through a seven-speed automatic transmission to one heck of a four-wheel-drive system. Like all G-wagens, the G63 6×6 offers a two-speed transfer case and a locking center differential, but the 6×6 also boasts a locking differential on each of the three axles, along with a locking inter-axle differential for the rear axles. Each hub carries 12.5-inch beadlock rims, like its Aussie counter parts, but wraps them in gargantuan 37-inch tires. A lifted suspension and Ohlins dampers are also added to help soften any blows encountered off-road.
This being an AMG, the G63 6×6 is fast. Mercedes-Benz claims that the G6x6 can hit 62 mph in less than six seconds – impressive, considering it weighs an insane 8322 lbs. The uber-G can only reach a top speed of 100 mph, which is essentially governed by those crazy tires. The truck should return just 12.5 mpg on the EU combined cycle, but AMG addresses the question of range by fitting a second gas tank, upping the total gasoline storage to 42 gallons. AMG’s also equipped the G63 6×6 with a central tire inflation system (CTIS), which allows the driver to deflate the tires to increase footprint on soft terrain.
On the inside, the giant Merc looks and feels like just another AMG G-Class, with seats upholstered in quilted leather and a cabin festooned with other Designo fittings. It’s a reminder that the G-Class has come a long way from its utilitarian roots.
Speaking of utilitarian roots, don’t expect to score one of these trucks at military-surplus pricing. Mercedes says it intends to build 20 to 30 of these…beasts…at a staggering cost of $525,595. As for its availability in the United States, we’re going to say it’s a safe bet the G63 AMG 6×6 won’t be stalking an interstate or salt flat near you any time soon.
