Our spy photographers once again caught the upcoming Mercedes-Benz AMG GT testing, and this time the Porsche 911-fighting coupe wore barely any camouflage cladding. The sports car, known internally as the C190 or R190, was originally expected to be called the Mercedes SLC but is now believed to bear AMG GT badges.
We reported a year ago that Mercedes was developing a “baby” SLS AMG to replace that car when its production run ends in 2014. The two-seater will be lighter and smaller than the current SLS AMG GT, and it will have traditional doors rather than the SLS’s dramatic gullwings. Mercedes also won’t build a roadster version, whereas the SLS AMG is offered in topless form.
As our previous spy photos revealed, the Mercedes AMG GT will essentially continue the long-hood, short-deck proportions of the SLS. The new car’s bubble-shaped cabin appears to have a more gracefully sloped, shallow rear window than its predecessor, and the AMG GT may also be considerably narrower than before. Given that Mercedes will position the AMG GT as a rival to the Porsche 911, the more compact dimensions make sense — and will help Mercedes drop the car’s curb weight.
As for power, the Mercedes AMG GT will likely use a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 that is said to be derived from the 2.0-liter turbo-four in the new CLA250 and CLA45 AMG. The base model will reportedly produce 500 hp, putting it on par with the Porsche 911 Turbo, while an eventual Black Series high-performance variant could boast 600 hp.
The Mercedes AMG GT will reportedly launch late next year, likely at a major European auto show. Expect more details to trickle out from German over the coming months.
