After months of rumors and speculation, it’s finally official: the upcoming Mercedes-Benz AMG GT sports car will use a new twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 engine. The mill, which uses up to 17.4 psi of turbo boost, is rated for 510 hp at 6250 rpm, and 479 lb-ft of torque between 1750 and 4750 rpm.
The Mercedes-Benz AMG GT engine is called the M178, and is related to other new twin-turbo V-8 engines within the Mercedes family. This engine, however, has multiple high-performance changes to prepare it for duty in a serious sports car. Dry-sump oiling negates the need for an oil pan, allowing the engine to sit 2.2 inches lower in the car’s chassis. Forged pistons add strength, while a special “nano slide” coating inside the cylinders reduces friction against the pistons. The turbochargers are located within the engine’s valley, with a pair of intercoolers sited ahead of the V-8.
The Mercedes-Benz AMG GT is expected to be a smaller, more nimble sports car that will take on the likes of the Porsche 911, as compared to the larger and heavier SLS AMG GT it replaces. As revealed by teaser photos and spy shots, the AMG GT continues its predecessor’s long-nose, slung-back cabin design, with a small rounded greenhouse behind the home of the M178 V-8. Inside, the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT will include all the trappings of other modern Mercedes products, including a bevy of circular air vents, a tablet-like infotainment screen perched atop the dashboard, and a fat, rising center console replete with an electronic transmission shifter and several button for switching the car’s driving modes.
The Mercedes-Benz AMG GT will make its official debut this fall, possibly at the Paris auto show in October or at the Los Angeles auto show in November.
