McLaren May Craft Race-Spec MP4-12C for Privateer Race Teams

During the public launch of the new MP4-12C sports coupe, McLaren Automotive Chairman Ron Dennis said the company will only build sports cars. Although, if gently nudged by privateer race teams with oodles of cash, it could craft a race-spec version of the MP4-12C.

“We don’t have plans to race it,” Dennis told Autosport, “but we do recognize that some of our customers will want to race this car.

“At the appropriate time, we will form a department to service that — but thoughts on a factory team entering any series are premature.”

If anything, it’s refreshing to see McLaren keep an open mind to the car’s motorsport potential. While GTR and GT-spec variants of its fabled F1 were ultimately created, those variants were afterthoughts — the engineering team designed the car first and foremost to be the world’s greatest road car.

Although the MP4-12C will likely spend most of its life on public roads, the notion of a stripped-down version in race livery competing with the likes of Audi’s R8 LMS and the Aston Martin DBRS9 in the GT3 class warms our heart.
