No more teasing: McLaren revealed photos of its newest supercar, the 650S, a few weeks ahead of the car’s official reveal at the 2014 Geneva auto show. Designed to slot in between the 616-hp 12C coupe and Spider, and the 903-hp P1, the McLaren 650S is said to, “give the enthusiast driver the ultimate in luxury, engagement, and excitement.”
Like the cars by which it is bookended, the McLaren 650S uses a twin-turbocharged 3.8-liter V-8 engine. It makes 641 hp — or 650 PS, as the name suggests — and although McLaren won’t reveal exact metrics until a later date, the company says the 650S will be faster than the existing 12C. Other mechanical highlights include three-mode ProActive Chassis Control active suspension, an enhanced version of the AirBrake rear wing used on the 12C and P1, and Pirelli P-Zero Corsa tires wrapped around new lightweight alloy wheels.
The bodywork takes cues from the McLaren P1, with a low, wide stance typical of supercars. The rounded LED headlights sit atop enormous air vents that feed the McLaren 650S’s radiators, with a prominent black splitter forming the bottom of the front fascia. The doors open upwards, a sloped glass rear window exposes the engine bay, and the rear fascia, with its blacked-out design and twin parallelogram exhausts, is said to be inspired by that of the McLaren 12C GT3 racing car. Though it’s a pretty design, it’s not all for show, as McLaren says the 650S has 24 percent more aerodynamic downforce at 150 mph than the 12C.
“Everything we’ve learnt from the 12C and the McLaren P1 has gone into the design and development of the McLaren 650S,” McLaren Automotive CEO Mike Flewitt said in a statement. “We are always seeking to innovate, to be the class leaders, to bring new technologies and thinking to market.”
Despite the focus on performance, McLaren says the new car will have “executive saloon” levels of ride quality and refinement. The equipment list will include a backup camera, Bluetooth, satellite radio, carbon fiber bucket seats, and “extended” interior carbon-fiber trim. While the coupe is shown here, the McLaren 650S will also be available as a Spider with a power-folding hardtop. Both models go on sale this spring after the car’s public debut in Geneva.
