May 2014 Crossover Sales: Toyota RAV4 Outshines Chevrolet Equinox

Two Japanese crossovers dominate the top three spots in CUV sales in May, with the Honda CR-V taking the number one spot with 32,430 units sold. The Ford Escape once again assumed the second position with 31,896 units sold, while the Toyota RAV4 overtook the Chevrolet Equinox for the third spot with 23,465 units sold versus the 22,695 American CUVs sold.

Following the fourth-place Equinox is the Nissan Roque in fifth with 18,722 units accounted for. The Jeep Cherokee also had a good month in May, coming up only 8 units short from selling 16,000. Meanwhile, our 2014 Motor Trend SUV of the Year, the Subaru Forester, landed in the seventh spot with 14,146 units moved off dealer lots. Although it couldn’t surpass the 10,000 mark, the fuel-efficient Mazda CX-5 still brought in good numbers with 9291 sold, while the GMC Terrain and Jeep Compass rounded out the top 10 with 8734 and 8666 crossovers sold, respectively.

The Jeep Patriot wasn’t far from making the cutoff with 8242 units, though the Subaru Crosstrek was behind with only 5778 units. The Hyundai Tucson couldn’t quite get to 5000 units with 4482, while the Kia Sportage fared better than it did in April with 4009 units. Following the Kia are the Nissan Juke, Volkswagen Tiguan, and Mini Countryman/Paceman.
