Magnifico! New Lamborghini V-12 Makes 691 HP, Bound for Murcielago Successor

Any Lamborghini fan knows the legacy and importance of the V-12 engine, and the Italian automaker of exotic sports cars has graced us with details on its new 6.5-liter twelve-cylinder due for the Murcielago’s replacement.

The longitudinally mounted twelve-cylinder is coded internally as the L539 and weighs in at 518 pounds. Special emphasis was placed on weight during development and aluminum-silicon alloy was the building material of choice. The pistons and connecting rods are made of forged alloy and steel. The short-stroke configuration is sure to whet the appetite of speed lovers around the world and the ever-important power specifications are 691 horsepower and 509 pound-feet of torque, a good 30-horsepower and 22 pound-foot improvement over the Murcielago LP670-4 SuperVeloce.

Four individual throttle bodies feed air to the twelve thirsty combustion chambers and the three-into-one exhaust system is regulated by a set of flaps and valves to put out distinctive notes. The advanced engine is then put to work through Lamborghini’s new seven-speed Independent Shifting Rods semi-automatic transmission, which uses two shafts, four ISRs, and a double-plate clutch for exceptionally quick gear changes. To put things in perspective, the new ISR transmission is supposedly 40-percent faster than the brand’s egear system. The complete gearbox assembly weighs 154 pounds.

Key engine specs

Maximum horsepower — 691 horsepower at 8250 rpm
Maximum torque — 509 pound-feet at 5500 rpm

And when will we see the eventual Murcielago successor with the latest 6.5-liter V-12? It’ll supposedly be bred through extensive consumption of carbon fiber and come to us at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show. Stay tuned.
