Lotus Readying Convertible, Hybrid, 400-HP Versions of Evora

The model explosion at Lotus is only just getting started: the British company will soon launch convertible, hybrid, and flagship 400-hp versions of the Evora sports car. According to Auto Express, all three variants have been confirmed by Lotus CEO Danny Bahar.

As we previously reported, Lotus CEO Danny Bahar has said that development on the new Elan had been delayed, freeing up capacity for more work on the Evora. “This allows us to focus more of our attention on the Evora which I believe has fantastic potential,” Bahar said. A revamped Evora coupe with “147 changes” should bow at the Frankfurt motor show later this year.

The halo car would likely be based on the Evora Cup race car. AE predicts it will have even fewer creature comforts than the standard car, with the supercharged 3.5-liter V-6 from the Evora S upgraded to a mean 400 hp.

Lotus unveiled the Evora 414E Hybrid concept at the 2010 Geneva motor show, and AE suggests the car will finally reach production in about two years. It will couple a 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine with a pair of electric motors, for total system output of 737 lb-ft of torque. Sound unbelievable? The car is also claimed to reach 60 mph in 4.4 seconds and emit a Toyota Prius-beating 55 grams of CO2 per kilometer. AE says the hybrid will start at double the $74,675 base price with destination of a standard Evora.

As to a convertible, there is precious little information other than AE’s assertion that Bahar says the car is under development. An Evora convertible would apparently share its soft-top mechanism with the upcoming Esprit convertible.

While all three Evora variants sound pretty ambitious, it’s clear that Bahar wants to branch out into as many automotive niches as possible. He has previously said he wants Lotus to build a tiny city car as well as a McLaren-beating, 212-mph supercar. Which of these three Evora variants do you want to see reach production?
