In an ever-shrinking Ford empire, which has spent much of 2010 selling off and killing brands, Lincoln has a chance to redefine itself through future products. Here’s what we’ve heard about updates and upcoming Lincoln products.
MKS: Lincoln’s upscale Taurus variant received the corporate EcoBoost 3.5-liter V-6 for 2010, and soldiers on with few changes for the 2011 model year. A full redesign is planned for 2016.
MKT: Introduced not long ago, the MKT will be the beneficiary of a cosmetic refresh in 2012. Changes to the Ford Flex platform-mate are not yet confirmed, but may include interior and exterior styling updates.
MKX: The midsize MKX crossover receives a new face for 2011, and a complete redesign is set for the MKX and the Ford Edge for 2014. Other changes for 2011 include the addition of the MyLincoln Touch infotainment system and the 3.7-liter V-6 shared with the Edge.
Navigator: With the redesign of the next Ford Expedition delayed, there are few updates for the full-size Navigator. The Mustang’s 5.0-liter V-8 is rumored to make an appearance in Navigator engine bays, as well as a possible turbocharged EcoBoost engine, but not in the near future.
Compact car: With the death of Mercury, it’s likely that Lincoln will produce a Ford Focus-based compact car. The next-generation Focus is set to launch next year, but don’t expect a Lincoln variant to materialize until several years after.
Midsize sedan: Is there room for a second midsize Lincoln sedan? Based on the popularity of the export market Ford Mondeo, Lincoln may incorporate the sedan into its lineup in small numbers to supplement the MKS.
