Lighter, Faster, Stronger: Caterham Launches Seven Supersport in Europe

Attention do-it-yourself fans: There’s a new model from Caterham, the race-inspired Supersport. Weighing just 1144 pounds and with 140 horsepower, Caterham predicts the Supersport will hit 60 mph in 4.9 seconds and continue on to over 120 mph.

The Supersport features a host of upgrades inspired by Caterham’s own race cars, although it’s not nearly as hard-edged as the SP/300.R track toy that debuted in January. Instead, it’s designed to offer high-performance thrills for a relatively modest price. Motivation comes from a Ford Sigma 1.6-liter I-4 , which offers up 140 horsepower and 120 pound-feet of torque. It’s mated to a five-speed manual transmission with sportier gear ratios, and paired with both a lightened flywheel and a limited-slip differential. The Supersport rides on firmer springs and dampers, along with 13-inch wheels shod in sticky Avon CR500 tires.

The Supersport costs £19,995 in kit form (about $35,500) or £22,995 (about $37,300) fully assembled from the factory. Race-inspired standard features include a shift light, four-point harness, and racing seats. The lengthy options list includes a six-speed transmission, four-piston front brake calipers, carbon-fiber bodywork, a roll bar, and a catalytic-converter bypass pipe for track use. We’d love to see it stateside, but so far, there’s no word on if the Supersport will be added to Caterham USA’s portfolio.
