Lexus LFA Returns to 24 Hour Race at Nürburgring

This may look like the special edition LFA we showed you yesterday, but this is actually the latest iteration of Lexus’ supercar to compete in the Nürburgring‘s grueling 24-hour race on May 13.

The LFA is no stranger to the event. Long before Toyota committed to pushing the car into production, the race served as one of the only ways we could lay eyes on the beast. Engineers the world over have for years used the German track as a proving grounds to develop chassis tuning, but Toyota engineers actually fielded their prototypes in the midst of a long, wild race.

This year, expect Lexus to use the Nürburgring race less for development and more to prove the mettle of its $400,000 coupe. Gazoo Racing will again be responsible for the two cars entered into the event, but unlike prior years, these cars will actually be based upon the final production vehicle. Headlamp assemblies and the front fascia are cribbed from the road-going model, although the flared front fenders, round LED tail lamps, fixed rear wing, and the plethora of cooling vents scattered over the car set the race version apart from a “standard” LFA.

Gazoo’s team seems to be equally split between Japanese and German drivers. Drivers confirmed for this year’s Nürburgring event include Takayuki Kinoshita (the event’s most successful Japanese driver), Akira Ida, Juichi Wakisaka, Kazuya Oshima, Armin Hahne, Jochen Krumbach, and Andrew Lotterer.

Notably absent from Gazoo’s lineup, however, is Akio Toyoda. Although the company’s president (and principal partner of the Gazoo team) drove an LFA in last year’s 24 Hours event, we imagine he has his hands full with corporate matters these days…
