Lexus LF-LC Bound For Showroom – Report

Originally intended as a conceptual showcase for the brand’s new design language, the California-penned Lexus LF-LC concept looks like it may be production-bound, according to a report from Automotive News. Over its nearly decade-long production run, the SC 430 coupe began showing its age, and carried the dubious distinction of being one of the last vehicles to have a cassette player when it ended production in 2010. A production version of the hybrid-powered LF-LC would finally give Lexus a modern, efficient, high-performance premium coupe option, joining the IS hardtop convertible, and six-figure LFA among Lexus’ two-door lineup.

The pressure is heating up for Lexus, which for many years was comfortably on top of luxury car sales, but has recently been eclipsed by its German arch-rivals Mercedes-Benz and BMW, as well as having to fend off a resurgent Audi. The 2013 Lexus GS, with its leaner lines and more aggressive styling, has signaled a change in direction for the brand, which gained a reputation for making refined, feature-packed, but somewhat bland, uninvolving models. Although the high-performance Lexus IS-F has been out since the 2008 model year, and the ultra-exclusive LFA exotic debuted for 2011, the two models were notable exceptions to Lexus’ otherwise sedate lineup.

The LF-LC concept featured a front-engine, rear-drive hybrid powertrain. The specific engine was not disclosed at the Detroit debut, but may be a version of the GS’ 3.5-liter V-6.
