Lamborghini has built the last-ever example of the Gallardo supercar, ten years after introducing the car at the 2003 Geneva auto show. The final car was a Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4 Spyder Performante painted Rosso Mars and destined for the hands of a private collector.
Over the past decade, Lamborghini has sold a total of 14,002 copies of the Gallardo, a number that is especially impressive given that the Italian company has built only 30,000 cars total since 1963. During that time, Lamborghini built 32 different variations of the Gallardo, including the police version that still plies the autostradas of Italy.
The Lamborghini Gallardo is officially the best selling Lamborghini nameplate in history. The Murciélago is in second place, with 4099 units sold during its nine-year production run.
The Lamborghini Gallardo coupe was introduced in Geneva in 2003, and the topless Gallardo Spyder followed in 2005. Two years later, the Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera arrived with reduced weight, improved power, and abundant carbon-fiber components. Only 172 examples of that stripped-down model were brought to the U.S. market
The second-generation Lamborghini Gallardo debuted at the 2008 Geneva auto show, now bearing the suffix LP560-4 in reference to its 560-hp direct-injected V-10 engine and standard four-wheel drive. In 2010, Lamborghini followed up the original Superleggera (it means lightweight in Italian) with the LP570-4 Superleggera. As the name suggests, it boasted a 570-hp rating for its 5.2-liter V-10 engine. The most recent derivative is the Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4 Squadra Corse, which bowed earlier this year at the 2013 Frankfurt auto show.
Next year, the Gallardo’s replacement is expected to debut at the Geneva auto show. It is expected to be called the Lamborghini Cabrera and is rumored to extract as much as 600 hp from its 5.2-liter V-10 engine.
