Kia’s Gameplan: Quality Over Quantity

It’s no secret that Kia has been posting record sales numbers, but the problem with such high demand is that the Korean automaker can’t crank them out as quickly as it would like. But co-CEO Lee Sam-ung isn’t losing any sleep over it because he believes quantity over quality is the right approach.

According to Automotive News, the Korean automaker is sticking to its guns and focusing more on building quality vehicles over output.  Kia says it has no plans on building any new plants in the near future, and despite worries limited production will hurt sales growth, Sam-ung is expecting sales to subside because of the slipping global economy.

“Global auto demand is expected to deteriorate, but we will launch new models, strengthen local promotions and enhance brand competitiveness to cope,” Lee said.

New models including all-electric cars, scheduled to launch in 2014 and 2015, will help Kia, along with its sister company Hyundai, stay in the game.

Currently, Hyundai has one plant in Montgomery, Alabama where it produces Sonatas and Elantras; Kia has a plant in West Point, Georgia where it builds its Optima midsize sedan and Sorento crossover, as well as the Hyundai Santa Fe crossover that the Sorento shares its platform with. The two plants collectively can crank out close to 600,000 vehicles annually.
