Kia Details 2013 Pro_cee’d GT Before Geneva Debut, Ready to Fight VW GTI

Kia has taken the wraps off of its Pro_cee’d GT hot hatch prior to the car’s official debut next month at the Geneva Motor Show. The Korean automaker hopes to dethrone the likes of the Volkswagen GTI and Ford Focus ST with the new, 201-hp GT.

The Pro_cee’d GT is, unsurprisingly, based on the three-door Kia Pro_cee’d hatchback. To up the performance quotient, the automaker has slotted a new 1.6-liter turbo-four under the hood that’s good for 201 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent to the front wheels through a six-speed manual transmission, and can scoot the hot hatch from 0 to 62 mph in 7.9 seconds. Those numbers are right on par with the 200-hp and 207-lb-ft GTI, but fall short of the Focus ST’s 252 hp and 270 lb-ft.

Aesthetic updates from the pedestrian Pro_cee’d to the enthusiast-oriented GT include quad-LED daytime running lights, dual exhaust pipes, 18-inch alloy wheels, red brake calipers, larger intakes, Recaro front seats, and a peppering of GT badging inside and out.

Pricing has yet to be announced, but expect this Korean hot hatch to be a European-only affair. Production begins at the automaker’s plant in Slovakia this spring, with U.K. sales beginning in the summer. For now, the car is offered only in a three-door form, but Kia says its five-door Cee’d hatchback will also get the GT treatment later in the year.

Kia just took the wraps off of the all-new U.S.-spec 2014 Forte sedan at the L.A. show in November. Would you want the Cee’d/Pro_cee’d offered here as the next-generation Forte5? If so, would you want the GT variant here as a competitor for the GTI and Focus ST? Let us know in the comments section.
