Kia is celebrating its 18th consecutive monthly sales record. The other Korean automaker reports it moved 45,038 cars last month – up 37.3 percent over February of 2011’s sales of 32,806. Sales are also up nearly 25 percent year-to-date over last year.
Kia’s number one sellers continue to be the mid-size Optima sedan, Soul “urban passenger vehicle,” and Sorento crossover. The automaker moved 11,558 Optima sedans (an increase of a whopping 42 percent compared to February last year), 10,876 Souls (an increase of 38.5 percent), and 8386 Sorento SUVs (a decrease of 255 units).
Rio sales were also way up – 51.5 percent compared to last February for a total of 3598 units sold. Sportage CUV sales were 14 percent to 3410 units sold. Sedona minivan sales were up 101 units to 1504 sold. Forte sales were also up for a total of 5706 units sold – an increase of 402.
The automaker credits its growth to increased U.S. manufacturing output, as well as its vehicles fuel efficiency and “fun-to-drive” nature.
Hyundai is reporting last month as its all-time best February to date. The Korean automaker sold 51,115 vehicles – an increase of 18 percent compared to the shortest month of 2011. Hyundai says retail sales through dealerships were up 29 percent, and fleet sales only comprise eight percent of the mix.
The Sonata, Elantra and Accent continue to lead Hyundai’s charge. Hyundai sold 17,425 Sonata sedans (up 11 percent), 13,820 Elantra sedans (up 12 percent), and 5806 Accent sedans and hatchbacks (up 29 percent). The automaker also reports that Veloster three-door hatch sales nearly doubled since January. Sales of Genesis/Equus models are also up five percent compared to last February.
There were a few not-so-bright spots for Hyundai last month. Sales of both the Santa Fe and Veracruz SUVs were down compared to the same month last year. Hyundai sold only 3864 Santa Fe SUVs – down nearly 10 percent; and only 451 Veracruz SUVs – a drop of 20 percent. Only 13 Azera sedans were sold last month compared to the 167 units sold February 2011 – likely due to the all-new car barely reaching showrooms.
Hyundai claims that 40 percent of its vehicles sold in February achieve 40 mpg highway which it credits with its record sales growth. The automaker also set an all-time best of 37.7 percent CAFE average for the brand.
