Hans-Jürgen Wöhler, Porsche’s Boxster/Cayman model line director, affirms that a Cayman CS is not currently in the works but that “anything is possible.”
“We now have a new CEO in Matthias Müller and he has some ideas,” said Wöhler. “This is the decision of the board: which car line, which direction.”
If the Cayman Club Sport were to join the lineup, it’d need to continue the weight-saving strategy started by the R iteration, which already runs a 2.6-gallon-smaller fuel tank (compared to the Cayman S), carbon-fiber-backed seats, and ditches the air conditioning and sound system. If there is a power bump in store for the 3.4-liter flat-six (330 horsepower in the Cayman R), we’d expect it be a Porsche-esque, limited gain — something in the neighborhood of another 10 extra horsepower. Porsche states the Cayman R weighs 2849 pounds and will cost over $66,000 when it goes on sale in February.
Wöhler likened the Cayman CS product planning direction to that of the Boxster Spyder, which loses most of its creature comforts.
“It’s [Boxster Spyder] very ‘sharp’, and you only reach certain volumes with the positioning of that car,” continued Wöhler. “With the Cayman R, the day-to-day usability is really another world compared with the Spyder. But a CS version of the Cayman would be like the Spyder in the positioning.”
