James Beard Approved: Mercedes-Benz SL550 Inspires “Picnic” Menu

We wondered how the new 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL550 drove, but never inquired as to how it tasted. That said, the automaker has provided details of a gourmet “picnic” menu that was allegedly inspired by the latest SL roadster.

For the third straight year, Mercedes-Benz owners will be able to indulge in a sampling menu during the James Beard Foundation’s Chefs & Champagne Event, held in the Hamptons. This year, Chef Daniel Humm (of New York’s Eleven Madison Park and NoMad restaurants) devised a “picnic” menu inspired by the 2013 SL550 roadster. Although Mercedes may be calling this a picnic, only the a brand with the kind of prestige as the three-pointed star could call this anything less than a gourmet feast.

Benz owners will need to bring a big picnic basket (or three) if they want to take this five-course meal on the road. The menu Humm has created includes strawberry gazpacho with guanciale Italian bacon and basil; heirloom tomatoes with mozzarella and Provencal granola; seared scallops with minestrone and summer beans; squab with dehydrated blueberries and smoked corn rhubarb tart, with coconut oregano foam and brown sugar crumble.

How does coconut oregano foam relate to an SL550, you ask? Says Bernhard Glaser, the vice president of marketing for Mercedes-Benz USA: “Chef Humm’s recipes reflect an elegant and thoughtful approach, which can be appreciated on many levels in the same way the new SL550 is engineered and designed.” Sure thing.

For those whose palettes lean toward 91-grade octane, Mercedes will be, of course, showcasing a 2013 SL550 at the Chefs & Champagne Event. The 2013 GL-Class, an SLS AMG Roadster, and an SLK-Class roadster will also be on hand, along with a 1954 190SLR.

Any Mercedes-Benz owners who are interested in the Chefs & Champagne event will also be able to indulge in Wolffer Estate Vineyard wines, Champagne Nicolas Feuillatte, and Stella Artois beer this Saturday, July 21, as well as the epicurean creations of over two dozen other James Beard Foundation-honored chefs.
