Although we expect Audi to receive most of the attention at the 2009 Petit Le Mans this weekend, Jaguar fans will have something to cheer about during the ALMS race. Along with partner Paul Gentilozzi and his RSR Racing Team, the British automaker will launch its new XKR GT2 racer into competition.
“We started our GT2 car with a real Jaguar XKR,” says Gentilozzi. “This is not a panel-built or fabricated car. We are using all of the aluminum skeletal structure of the car, the production doors, roof, and decklid.”
For an owner, Gentilozzi has a very hands-on approach to running the team. Along with renowned drivers Scott Pruett and Marc Goossens, Gentilozzi will also pilot the XKR GT2 car in the 2010 ALMS season. Gentilozzi has a long-standing relationship with Jaguar. He’s raced XKRs in the Trans Am series in the past, and also piloted a modified XF-R to a speed record at the Bonneville Salt Flats.
Jaguar may simply be viewing this first race primarily as a testing and development day, but we wish it and the RSR team the best of luck. Coverage of the event can be seen tomorrow on Speed Channel, starting at 11 A.M. EST.
