Jaguar plans to introduce its “fastest and most powerful saloon” ever next week at the Los Angeles auto show. Shown here in a teaser photo, the Jaguar XFR-S will be the company’s second “R-S” model and is expected to have similar performance to the existing XKR-S coupe and convertible.
We first heard rumors about a Jaguar XFR-S in January, and then in August and October our spy photographers caught prototypes testing at the Nürburgring. Those prototypes wore a big rear wing, larger brakes, quad exhaust tips, large front air intakes, and a racier body kit that included a rear diffuser.
The Jaguar XFR-S should follow the same formula as the XKR-S coupe and convertible (pictured below). The regular XFR and XKR performance cars use a supercharged 5.0-liter V-8 engine with 510 hp and 461 lb-ft of torque, while the XKR-S has an upgraded version of that engine good for 550 hp and 502 lb-ft. A six-speed automatic transmission sends power to the rear wheels. Jaguar says the existing XFR can hit 60 mph from rest in 4.7 seconds, while the XKR-S coupe manages the same feat in just 4.2 seconds, so expect the XFR-S to post performance figures somewhere in between those two.
In addition to the power increases, the XKR-S also receives firmer suspension, stronger brakes, and numerous weight-saving carbon-fiber components.
With as much as 550 hp on tap, the Jaguar XFR-S would be well poised to take on similar performance sedans like the BMW M5. The German power sedan has a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 engine with 560 hp and 500 lb-ft. The faster Jaguar could also take on the Audi S6, which extracts 420 hp and 406 lb-ft from its twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 engine.
At the L.A. auto show, Jaguar also will show the F-Type roadster — marking the car’s first official appearance in the U.S. The sports car goes on sale in summer 2013.
