Jaguar is only just starting to release the all-new 2014 F-Type roadster this year, but a new report states that there could be more in the works. If this is correct, expect a hardcore road racer to come in the near future.
According to Autocar, Jaguar’s top brass is currently investigating a range-topping F-Type that would have somewhere in the neighborhood of 600 hp. In actuality, the possibility of such a car isn’t quite that out there – the regular F-Type (pictured) already offers the 495-hp version of Jag’s 5.0-liter supercharged V-8 engine, which is also offered in 510- and 550-hp form elsewhere in the lineup and could theoretically be tuned to produce even more power.
While speaking with Jaguar global brand director Adrian Hallmark, the executive alluded to the possibility of extracting even more power from the 5.0-liter. “There’s a lot you can do with supercharging, but the lesson we learned was that driveability must always come before brute force. For most people, [550 hp] is enough anyway, and whatever power you have, the trick is in being able to get it down on the road. You can have all the power in the world if you want it, but getting the traction to use it is the key.”
Hallmark also told Autocar that there will be more limited-run cars would follow the race-inspired XKR-S GT. “Clearly, building a run of 30 to 50 exclusive GTs isn’t going to have any impact on the fortunes of the company in sales terms,” he said, “but the importance of these projects lies in the knowledge they give us.”
The hottest F-Type model isn’t expected to begin production until at least 2016 at the earliest, but there’s a chance the British automaker could show something off at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this summer, where it has previously showcased early vehicle developments. Fans of race-ready Jaguars will have some placeholders in the meantime, however. It’s assumed that the XFR-S will also gain a GT model in the same vein as the XKR-S and that there are both F-Type R and R-S models in the works, all of which would use the 550-hp 5.0-liter.
