Is The Toyota Hybrid-R Concept A Hot Hybrid Yaris?

Could the Hybrid-R concept really be a 400 hp Yaris?

Toyota is slowly leaking out more and more of its upcoming Hybrid-R Concept for the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show in September. Last week we saw the badge, and this week we get a sneak peek at the front corner of the car.

After inspecting the latest teaser shot, we were surprised to see that the front end and headlight shape of the Toyota Hybrid-R concept is a dead ringer for the Euro-market Yaris Hybrid hatchback. Although Toyota did announce that the Hybrid-R would be based on an existing Toyota model, the compact Yaris hatchback is an unexpected choice for this sporty hybrid concept.

The Toyota Hybrid-R concept is meant to be a Le Mans-inspired road car which will use a similar hybrid powertrain as the Toyota tS030 hybrid Le Mans racer. In the race car, this hybrid driveline consists of a 3.4-liter V-8 engine and two electric motors, called the Toyota Hybrid System-Racing. At this point we don’t know how much this powertrain will change for the Toyota Hybrid-R concept, but we do know that it will produce more than 400 hp in total combined power output.

A 400 hp Toyota Yaris Hybrid hatchback sounds like an interesting proposition to us, and we look forward to seeing the Toyota Hybrid-R concept at its official debut September 10.
