Is the Chevrolet Camaro Eating Into Corvette Sales?

The Chevrolet Camaro almost outsold the Ford Mustang for the 2009 calendar year, yet the Chevy wasn’t even on sale during the first couple months of the year. That’s great news for Chevrolet, but what effect is the Camaro having on the Corvette?

It’s unclear, but we can say that while the Camaro sold more than 60,000 units in its first calendar year, in 2009, the Corvette had its worst sales year since 1961, according to Ward’s Auto.

We are guessing not too many consumers interested in the 304-horsepower V-6 Camaro will also cross-shop a 430-horsepower V-8 Corvette with a nearly $50,000 starting price.

Then there’s the Camaro SS. Even loaded with options, a Camaro SS is far less expensive than a Corvette, yet still comes with a 426-horsepower, 6.2-liter V-8, and four-piston Brembo brakes. With the extra money you save on not buying a Corvette, you could always upgrade the performance of your Camaro…
