Is Ferrari Planning A 700-HP 599 GTO?

The last time the storied “gran turismo omologato” moniker appeared on a Ferrari was on the 1985 288 GTO, but according to some reports, the GTO nameplate could return on a wild, 700-hp road-going version of the wild 599xx race car.

According to British supercar magazine Evo, Ferrari now classifies the 599 as a sports car and not a gran touring, thus providing some rationale for a high-performance version that trumps the existing 599 HGTE. If produced, the car would likely borrow liberally from the 599XX, and could use a modified form of that car’s Enzo-derived 6.0-liter V-12. Power could be bumped by 89 hp by moving the redline up to a screaming 9000 rpm. The sole transmission choice would likely be Ferrari’s F1-style gearbox, modified so shifts can be fired off in a brutally quick 60 milliseconds.

Although it’s pure speculation, a 599 GTO could prove to be one of the fastest Ferrari road cars ever built. Evo estimates the car could reach a top speed of 217 mph, while the 0-60 mph time should drop even further (already, the 599 GTB performs this sprint in 3.7 seconds).

Should a 599 GTO reach production, it could carry a price tag of approximately a half-million dollars. Although that isn’t exactly cheap, considering the next best thing — a 599XX — supposedly carried a price tag of $2 million, it is a relative bargain…
