Infiniti’s Performance Line grew by one model this year with the addition of the IPL G Convertible, and the price of entry for that model is $61,495. That might seem steep, but Infiniti’s newest stunt proves that the G Convertible is the perfect car — especially if you’re driving down a runway in an attempt to catch a falling skydiver.
First thing’s first: the new crop of amped-up Infiniti G37 models arrives for the 2013 model year with slightly larger pricetags and plenty of performance to make it worthwhile. 2013 is the first model year Infiniti will sell the IPL G Convertible, which puts a 343-horsepower 3.7-liter V-6 engine and seven-speed automatic transmission under the hood of the hardtop convertible and adds goodies like a sports exhaust, 19-inch wheels, and climate controlled seats. The IPL G Convertible will run you $61,495, including destination, and it’s only available in malbec black or moonlight white.
The other two Infiniti G37 IPL cars return for another model year largely unchanged. The IPL G Coupe is available with a six-speed manual or seven-speed automatic transmission, and a 348-horsepower and 276 pound-feet version of Infiniti’s 3.7-liter V-6. The manual-transmission model starts at $51,395 and the automatic version starts at $53,295–an increase of $700 across the board.
Lest you think that spending $61,500 on a pumped-up Infiniti G37 convertible is too much, however, Infiniti’s newest stunt might be seen as completely over the top. In celebration of his win at the Monaco GP, F1 driver Marc Webber met up with Red Bull Air Force Manager Jon DeVore at a Montreal wind tunnel and took a few skydiving lessons. Once that was finished, the tables turned: Webber took DeVore to a nearby race circuit, grabbed an Infiniti G sedan, and taught the skydiver a little bit about performance driving. Once that was done, Infiniti set up the grand stunt: drop DeVoreout of a plane at 5000 feet and have him skydive, landing in the backseat of an Infiniti G Convertible driven by Webber at around 100 mph. The stunt was (predictably) tricky, but Infiniti and Webber claim that they did finally pull it off.
We hope Webber’s performance at the upcoming Canadian Grand Prix will be just as thrilling.
