Infiniti Reportedly Considering Possibility of 4-Door Coupe Flagship

Looking to differentiate itself from the more conventional luxury brands on the market, Infiniti is reportedly looking at the development of flagship with a four-door coupe body style, similar to the Porsche Panamera, Nissan executive vice president Andy Palmer said in an Automotive News report. The signature of future Infiniti models will reportedly be distinctive styling and hybrid powertrains.

Palmer specifically said, “We won’t do a [Mercedes] S-Class or that type of car” saying the brand has already done a car in that vein, but has had better success with other models. Although Infiniti is intentionally avoiding an S-Class type vehicle, the new Infiniti flagship could very well have Mercedes underpinnings, with Nissan-Renault and Daimler announcing a partnership several years ago, with the two collaborating on such projects as an engine plant, and development of the next-generation Smart.

However, Palmer noted that the sleek flagship has not yet been official green-lighted, saying the brand will need to sell plenty of Q50 sedans and Q60 crossovers to get the new model approved. Styling of the new model will likely take its influence from the Essence concept first shown at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show. Also on the drawing board to possibly follow the four-door coupe is a mid-engined two-seater modeled after the Emerg-E concept.
