Infiniti Q50 Eau Rouge Powered by 3.8L Turbo V-6

When the high-performance Infiniti Q50 Eau Rouge concept debuted at this year’s Detroit auto show, there was a shroud of mystery surrounding the car’s powertrain. After previewing this high-power engine with an audio clip, Infiniti has now announced at the 2014 Geneva auto show that the Infiniti Q50 Eau Rouge is powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.8-liter V-6 engine that puts its 560 hp and 442 lb-ft of torque through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and all-wheel drive.

If this powertrain sounds a bit familiar, that’s because the Nissan GT-R supercar also uses a twin-turbo 3.8-liter V-6 paired all-wheel drive. In that application, the engine produces 545 hp and 463 lb-ft of torque (or 600 hp in Nismo guise) and routes power through a six-speed dual-clutch transmission. Infiniti isn’t saying anything about a correlation between these two engines, but we would be willing to bet that the two V-6 powerplants share at least a few components. Instead of the GT-R’s advanced ATTESA E-TS all-wheel-drive system though, Infiniti says the Q50 Eau Rouge’s all-wheel-drive system operates on a full-time, 50/50 torque split front-to-rear.

Infiniti is predicting a 0-60-mph sprint of less than four seconds and a top speed near 180 mph. That means that a production version of the Infiniti Q50 Eau Rouge would be right in the mix with other high-performance luxury sedans like the 430-hp BMW M3 and the upcoming AMG version of the new Mercedes-Benz C-Class (the current C63 AMG Edition 507 already offers 507 hp). Infiniti chief Johan de Nysschen says that the Infiniti Q50 Eau Rouge concept received a highly positive response at the 2014 Detroit auto show, but the company still has not official confirmed the car for production.

On the other end of the Infiniti Q50’s powertrain spectrum, Infiniti will also show a version of the luxury sedan that is powered by a Mercedes-Benz-supplied 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. Although this powertrain is currently only confirmed for China and Europe, we think it’s possible that this version of the Infiniti Q50 will eventually make its way to the U.S., joining the current car’s 3.7-liter V-6 and providing Infiniti with a competitor for entry-level sport sedans like the BMW 320i and Audi A4 2.0T.
