Infiniti G37 Lives on as the 2015 Infiniti Q40

The outgoing Infiniti G sedan refuses to go away. A year after Infiniti announced that this aging sedan would continue to be sold alongside its Q50 replacement until the 2015 model year, the company announced that the car will be renamed Infiniti Q40 for its final year.

This means that the G37 will be the last model to transition to Infiniti’s new Q-based naming scheme as it fits below the Infiniti Q50 sedan and above the upcoming Infiniti Q30 compact. Infiniti has been selling the G alongside the Q50 ever since that new sedan debuted in late 2013, and the outgoing G has actually sold remarkably well in 2014 so far, moving 8441 copies to the Infiniti Q50’s 18,006 units through June. It makes sense, then, that Infiniti is keeping the G around a bit longer as the Q40 if it can still milk some profitable sales out of this compact sport sedan that was introduced way back in 2006.

The 2015 Infiniti Q40 will presumably carry on with a similar price as the 2014 Infiniti G37’s $33,455 starting price, which is actually $4150 less than the Infiniti Q50. Given that the two cars share the same 3.7-liter V-6 pumping out 328 hp, the Infiniti Q40 is a remarkable deal—we might even prefer the Q40’s direct handling and sportier dynamics compared with the artificial Q50 and its numerous electronic driving aids. The 2015 Infiniti Q40 will only be offered in Q40 and Q40 AWD models, with only four color choices and two available option packages—the Navigation Plus Package and the Moonroof Package.

The 2015 Infiniti Q40 will go on sale in August, and 2015 will be the last model year for this car. We know Infiniti is working on a replacement for the Infiniti Q60, which is still the old G37 bodystyle, and a new Q30 compact, but it remains to be seen if the Q40 nameplate is just a stop-gap measure or a name that will continue on for a new model in the future.
