Hyundai Elantra Leads March Compact Sales

Honda, Hyundai is knocking at your door. March 2013 sales saw a few major changes in the compact segment, with the Hyundai Elantra moving up to third place, right behind the Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic.

A new model might be just around the corner, but that isn’t stopping Toyota from selling Corollas by the bundle; Toyota sold 31,423 Corollas last month, an 11.1-percent sales increase as compared to March of last year (sales include Matrix). Although Honda Civic sales dipped 1.9-percent last month, the 27,665 coupes and sedans sold allowed Honda to retain the number-two slot. Hyundai rocketed up from fifth place to third in March, with 26,153 Elantras sold – the model’s best month of all time.

Chevrolet Cruze sales increased 7.7-percent last month, with 23,260 sold. Chevrolet and Hyundai sold plenty of compacts, but so did Ford with the Focus. The Ford’s 24,929 units sold mean the Focus settled in fourth place last month.

There wasn’t much action in the rest of the compact segment; Volkswagen continues to hold steady in sixth with 15,005 Jettas sold, and the Nissan Sentra is sitting in seventh with 13,965 sold. The rest of the compact segment is rounded out by the Mazda3 (10,505 sold) the Dodge Dart (8091 sold), Subaru Impreza (7054 sold), and the Kia Forte (5931 sold).
