Just because your car is front-wheel drive doesn’t mean you can’t get a little sideways. In a slightly updated version of the old lunch-tray trick, Mazda gave Canadian snowboarder Sebastien Toutant a 2014 Mazda 3 hatchback and a bunch of snowboards and let him loose on a track to see what he could do.
After placing Mazda-branded snowboards under the rear tires of the 2014 Mazda 3 and yanking the handbrake to lock the rear wheels in place, Toutant got to work and performed an impressive display of donuts, drifting, and even a few burnouts. It’s probably the closest a front-wheel-drive, mainstream hatchback will ever come to being a full-on drift machine. He goes through quite a few snowboards in the process, too, but hey—it’s all in the name of fun.
This partnership is no coincidence: Mazda Canada is a sponsor of Canada Snowboard, and Toutant himself was on the 2014 Canadian Olympic team in this year’s Winter Olympics. He also won gold at the Winter X Games in 2011.
The 2014 Mazda 3 is available as both a compact sedan or hatchback starting from $17,940 with destination in the U.S. It’s one of our favorite compacts on the market, as it not only won our compact sedan comparison test, but was even one of our Automobile All-Star winners for 2014.
