Honda Loses Second Place Japanese Brand Global Sales Ranking to Nissan

Nissan has ousted Honda from its No.2 global sales position among Japanese automakers with the sale of 4,080,588 vehicles during calendar year 2010 – 21.5 percent better than in 2009.

“2010 was a record-breaking year for Nissan as we assumed a position as the No. 2 Japanese manufacturer worldwide,” said David Reuter, Nissan’s corporate communications vice president. “This was a significant accomplishment given we have been No. 3 for a number of years.”

Retaining its spot at the top of the charts is Toyota with 2010 global sales of 7,528,000 units (up 8 percent). Third place Honda sold 3,555,000 vehicles (up 5 percent) worldwide, but remained in its No. 2 sales position in Japan (albeit by a very narrow margin).

Toyota’s domestic sales topped the charts at 1,566,000 units (up 14 percent); Honda with 647,000 units (up 3 percent); and Nissan with 645,320 units (up 7.7 percent).
