Civic, Elantra Top April 2013 Compact Sales

The Honda Civic and Hyundai Elantra together staged an upset in April compact sales. The Civic earned the top spot, while a hot-selling Elantra surged forwards, bumping the Toyota Corolla into third place.

Honda sold 26,453 Civics last month, beating all of its competitors by a wide margin. Those Civic sales represent an 8.3-percent year-over-year increase, though year-to-date sales are down 2.8 percent. The Elantra earned second place with 24,445 sedans, coupes, and hatchbacks sold. That puts Hyundai’s compact sales up 45.2 percent year-over-year, and boosts Elantra year-to-date sales above the Chevrolet Cruze. The Toyota Corolla, which was last month’s best-selling compact, fell to third place with 24,273 sold. Corolla sales are only down 2.1 percent for the month, but are up 12.1 percent overall for the year.

Sitting in fourth place with its crosstown rival hot on its tail was the Ford Focus, with 22,557 units sold last month – that’s a 16.1-percent year-over-year gain and a 1.2-percent dip for the year. The Chevrolet Cruze was just a couple hundred units shy of trumping the Ford, with 22,032 Cruzes sold last month, a 21-percent year-over-year increase.

In a distant sixth place was the Volkswagen Jetta sedan and wagon. Combined Jetta sales fell 16.5 percent to 13,078 units. While Jetta sales fell, sales of the seventh-place Nissan Sentra continue to grow, with 10,734 of the newly redesigned compact sedan finding homes in April. The Dodge Dart and Mazda3 followed the Sentra in eighth and ninth place.

Rounding out April’s compact sales is the Subaru Impreza/WRX, with 6200 sold, the 2014 Kia Forte, with 5212 sold, and the Volkswagen Golf lineup, with 2607 units sold.
