This year’s Pikes Peak International Hill Climb isn’t until the end of June, but we’re already seeing some major manufacturers show off their newest and fastest entrants. Today we take a look at a strange combination: an old Acura and a new Peugeot.
Acura Motorsports says it’ll race a slightly modified, original NSX up Pikes Peak this year, just two years before we see the final production version of the new/next NSX. The NSX will be one of 10 Honda/Acura vehicles to campaign this year in Honda’s so-called “eye toward…setting a record for the number of classes entered by a single manufacturer.” No word just yet on if Honda/Acura has succeeded.
Also aiming to harken back to 20 years ago is Peugeot’s return to Pikes Peak. The new Peugeot is the black-on-black thing you see in photos: it’s a modified version of the 208 hatchback. This is Peugeot’s first appearance at Pikes Peak in 24 years, the last time being the 205 Turbo 16 rally car’s 1988 run up the mountain. The 208 T16 has big shoes to fill: even without a fully paved track (that came in 2011), the 600-hp car made its run in just 10 minutes and 47 seconds.
While the 208 T16 is plenty capable in its stock, World Rally Championship-form, the version that will run the “race to the clouds” will receive some extensive changes to the body. The biggest changes are in terms of aerodynamics: there’s a very aggressive front diffuser, as well as a giant rear spoiler that should help the car stay planted on the road’s many corners. There’s also a larger front cooling aperture with large vents on the hood. For good measure, the car has plenty of naked carbon fiber for a cool, matte-black look. The interior gives new meaning to the word “minimal:” it’s dominated by a rollcage and doesn’t even house a dashboard.
