Australia’s Holden Racing Team revealed its new VF Commodore-based racing car, which will campaign in the V8 Supercars race series. It is closely based on a real Holden VF Commodore sedan that customers can buy — and thus once again previews the 2014 Chevrolet SS debuting this weekend.
The Holden VF Commodore forms the basis of the 2014 Chevrolet SS performance sedan that will be publicly revealed tomorrow. The mechanically identical cars will have V-8 engines and rear-wheel-drive, as will their racing derivatives. Yet there’s a big difference between the two models: Holden’s V8 Supercars entrant is closely based on a production car, and thus looks nearly identical to the VF Commodore and Chevrolet SS. The Chevrolet NASCAR racer, however, is built on the series’ “Car Of Tomorrow” platform and thus resembles an SS or VF Commodore only by virtue of stickers, decals, and some bodywork creases.
The 2013 Holden Racing Team car wears new livery that includes a reprisal of Holden’s “Red Lion” emblem on the hood, bronze wheels, and a bundle of sponsorship decals. The two cars will be driven by Garth Tander and James Courtney in this year’s V8 Supercars Championship.
The Chevrolet SS, meanwhile, will make its NASCAR debut this weekend at the Daytona 500 race. The event also will herald the public introduction of the 2014 Chevrolet SS road car, which will largely mirror the VF Commodore SS-V show car unveiled earlier this week.
