The GTI version of Volkswagen‘s fifth-generation Golf makes its debut at Paris, promising to take the iconic nameplate back to its sporting, hot-hatch roots-and, presumably, away from the poseur luxo-mobile that more recent versions have become. Powering the new GTI-which is available as both two-door and four-door-is VW’s new gasoline direct-injection turbocharged four. The 2.0 FSI T engine, which we’ll also see in the upcoming new and A3, puts out 197 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque, sent to the front wheels via either a six-speed manual or VW/Audi‘s DSG (Direct Shift Gearbox) clutchless manual. VW promises a 0-to-62 mph time of 7.2 seconds, on the way to a top speed of 146 mph. Chassis highlights include a lowered, sport-tuned suspension, four disc brakes, seventeen-inch alloys, and stability control. A red-outlined grille and plaid cloth sport seats recall the original, 1976 model. Let’s hope the driving experience does too.
