Gran Turismo 5 Cover Previewed Well Ahead of Launch

While we nervously await the next installment in the Gran Turismo series, Sony and Polyphony Digital have teased the cover artwork — once again testing the patience of gearhead gamers around the world.

The featured car is a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, depicted in a semi-translucent graphic. As one of the heavily hyped cars to be featured in the new game, GT5 developers have also demonstrated the digital SLS AMG in new promotional videos. The game itself is said to contain almost 1000 vehicles in total.
Recently, Sony launched a free downloadable demo of GT5 on the PlayStation Network, allowing would-be racers to get their first taste of the game’s new physics engine. Featuring a single track (the road course at Indianapolis Motor Speedway) and a choice of either a stock or tuned Nissan 370Z to hammer around the twisty circuit, the demo’s options are pretty sparse. Still, we found it to be engaging, especially considering the online competition for top average time around the circuit in the two cars. That competition ends January 25 and the winner will attend the 2010 Indy 500, compliments of Sony.
Though we’re looking forward to taking on GT5 for ourselves, we’re not holding our breath on a release anytime soon. The game has been delayed for more than a year from its initial shelf date. Although Japanese sales are currently scheduled to begin within months, there is no word on when the game will hit U.S. stores – or if it will suffer yet another delay, which we suspect will be the case. As the wait grows longer, expectations grow higher. Do you think Gran Turismo 5 will deliver the goods? Let us know in the comments section below.
