GM Opens IT Center in Texas, Plans to Bring IT In-House

General Motors just opened an Information Technologies Innovation office in Austin, Texas, and will hire up to 500 workers at that location. The opening of the Austin office is part of the company’s initiative to bring many of its IT resources and developments in-house under the leadership of recently-hired chief information officer Randy Mott. The selection of Austin as one of the IT center locations was based on the city’s high population of residents with the technical skills and background GM is seeking for the openings.

According to a Bloomberg report, only 10 percent of GM’s IT work is done in-house. Mott wants to eventually bring that to 90 percent. Austin is one of four locations the company is planning to open in the next three to five years, Mott said during a conference call. In a press release from GM, Mott said the objective of the new IT centers is to “design and deliver IT that drives down the cost of ongoing operations while continuously increasing the level and speed at which innovative products and services are available to GM customers.”

GM plans to hire several thousand workers as part of the IT initiative, which is a part of CEO Dan Akerson’s reorganization of the company around global functions and brands.
