The Cadillac XLR – a perennial also-ran in the luxury roadster segment – is in its final year. Production of the 2009 XLR will stop sometime this spring, and GM has not announced any plans to replace its luxury brand’s halo car.
Sharon Basel, a communications manager at GM, told the Bowling Green Daily News that models like the XLR ” often have limited product life cycles.”
“Difficult decisions have to be made to ensure that we can continue to develop, engineer and produce the most critical products in our portfolio.”
Sales of Cadillac’s hardtop convertible began in 2003 as a 2004 model, after it debuted at the 2003 North American International Auto Show. It was previewed by the Evoq concept originally shown at the 1999 North American International Auto Show. While the vehicle was generally well-received, it lagged in sales behind its more refined competitors, like the Mercedes-Benz SL-Class.
GM moved 1,250 examples of the XLR in 2008, down almost 29 percent from 2007.
