Appearing as a special guest on this week’s episode of Wide Open Throttle, GM president of North America Mark Reuss dropped by Motor Trend headquarters in a 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray convertible to discuss future products as well Camaro variants including the ZL1 and Z/28.
Reuss says that in the Chevrolet Corvette, they can’t get the smooth actuation from an automatic in a dual clutch just yet. But he says there isn’t really a push for a dual-clutch transaxle in this current-gen Chevrolet Corvette because it would change the positioning of the car, and he’s not sure buyers want that, at least right now. While we’d all love to hear Reuss confirm the rumor a future Corvette variant will use a 7.0-liter V-8 with around 600 hp, he told us to stay tuned. Guest host David Freiberger from Hot Rod wants to know if an all-wheel-drive Corvette has ever been discussed and Reuss says yes. Freiberger also askes Reuss to recount the story about how the Camaro ZL1 was originally going to be the Z/28.
The one question every host wanted answers for, though, was why there wasn’t a 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray didn’t compete at the 2013 Best Driver’s Car competition. Reuss explains that everyone at the plant is producing a very small amount of cars and doing very thorough quality checks on them, so they simply didn’t have one available.
