Opel/Vauxhall’s lawyers insist they be called “Flex Doors,” but we know them as “suicide doors,” being hinged at the rear so back-seat passengers have to step out into traffic. That said, they’re real cool and make it easier for four people to get in a car quickly. The new Meriva is the latest iteration of Opel’s small MPV, its exterior design cleaned up to better fit the brand’s move back to middle-upscale.
It’s a handsome little people mover with a clean, unassuming design, one that could make a small Buick. Better yet, perhaps a new small GMC, a more grownup companion to the Granite concept. It boasts a flexible center storage console rail, “Flexspace Seating” featuring rear seats that adjust from side-to-side to make a third position, and a bicycle carrier that pops out from the rear bumper. In other words, it out-Fits the Honda Fit.
Don’t expect to see it in the U.S. though, unless fuel prices jump, and stay there.
