Frankfurt 2011: Honda Launches “Blended Body” 2012 Euro Civic

/strong>Honda President and CEO Takanobu Ito took to the stage in Frankfurt this morning to officially unveil Europe’s new 2012 Civic. While onstage, Ito discussed Honda’s plan to reduce CO2 emissions (a big deal in Europe where engines are taxed by emissions) was going into effect with the new 2012 Euro Civic, which will feature a brand new diesel designed with Europe in mind.

Ito said in his Frankfurt remarks that initially, Europeans will have two engine options in the 2012 Civic. At launch, there will be a 1.8-liter gas-powered I-4, which Honda said will reduce CO2 emissions by 10 percent compared to the outgoing model, and a 2.2-liter diesel, which has better performance than the diesel in the outgoing Civic, while reducing CO2 emissions by 20 percent.

Honda said that by the end of 2012 the Civic will get a brand new, smaller diesel engine that was designed with Europe in mind. Honda said the new diesel will reduce CO2 emissions further than the 2.2-liter diesel that’s being offered at launch.

Ito also said that not only were the engines designed with Europe in mind, but the rest of the car was tailored for European tastes as well. Ito said that the new Civic was tested more on European roads than any other Honda in history. He then added that the new Euro Civic was fun and comfortable, with zero compromises made to achieve those improvements.

With all of the changes made to the 2012 Civic with both the environment and driving dynamics in mind, Ito proclaimed, “New Civic is not just an evolution, it is a revolutionary evolution. We have jumped two generations ahead of our current model.” Does this mean we’ve just gotten a sneak preview of what may be coming for the next North American-spec Civic?

At long last, Honda has unwrapped the all-new European-spec 2012 Civic. And, much like its North American relative, the new 2012 Model still bears considerable resemblance to the previous model.

Following in the footsteps of its similarly daring predecessor, the new Euro Civic features a much more radical design than its North American brethren. Honda says its designers wanted to keep the Civic as sporty as possible, while featuring a “more elegant, yet dynamic feel.” Honda said that most of the design of the new five-door hatch was inspired by ‘blended wind body’ aircraft, which is an airplane where the wings and fuselage blend into one, like the B-2 Spirit bomber.

Honda said that the other main focus for the European market 2012 Civic was to focus on ride and handling, while still improving the vehicle’s NVH ratings. We’ll have more details on what Europeans can find under the hood when the Civic is officially unveiled tomorrow, but it’s a safe bet a version of the CDTi turbodiesel will make an encore appearance on the Continent. The 2012 Honda Civic will hit European dealerships in early 2012.
