U.S. enthusiasts have been chomping at the bit for the upcoming 2012 Ford Focus ST — a performance variant on the compact hatchback that will come stateside with no changes from the European version to water it down. But wait, there’s more: Ford is putting serious thought to an ST performance version of the Fiesta subcompact hatch for worldwide consumption as well.
Unveiled yesterday at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the gape-mouthed Fiesta ST Concept shows just what the feistier Fiesta would look like. Bigger wheels, an aero body kit, loud paint, and the oversized black grille give the Fiesta an aggressive look. Under the hood, Ford promises a 1.6-liter turbocharged EcoBoost inline-four cylinder good for 180 hp that will send power to the front wheels through a six-speed manual transmission.
Even though Ford says that it may not build the Fiesta ST, it told us that if it were to come to fruition the Fiesta ST would go on sale about a year after the Focus ST. We have seen numerous prototypes undergoing testing, so our bet is that the Fiesta ST is a done deal, and should make its debut sometime in early 2013. For now, put on your Ray-Bans and bask in the bright orange paint job.
