Frankfurt 2011: BMW 1 Series Performance Studie

The 1 Series Performance Studie appeared at the Frankfurt Motor Show with almost no fanfare. BMW didn’t mention the car in any of its press conferences, and the black-on-white hatchback sat alone, isolated from the rest of the 1er crowd.

The Performance Studie isn’t actually a production car, but rather a preview of how a buyer could configure their 1 Series using the BMW Accessories catalog. It starts life as a European-market BMW 120d hatchback. Parts seen on the car include 19-inch Orbit Grey wheels, carbon-fiber mirror caps, a gloss-black front grille, a black rear spoiler, the black racing stripes, and black rear diffuser elements.

Inside, BMW Performance bits include an Alcantara covered steering wheel, shifter, and parking brake lever; new floor mats; a sport steering wheel; and shiny sport pedals.

Power comes from a 2.0-liter turbodisel engine, good for 184 hp and a claimed 0-to-62-mph run of 7.2 seconds. BMW says all the options and accessories seen on this car total 7780 euros (about $10,600), bringing the price of the 1 Series Performance Studie to 37,030 euros (about $48,200).
