Ford Updates Its 2013 Mustang Configurator Site

Now that Ford has released the 2013 Mustang to showrooms around the country, it only made sense for the automaker to updated its online Mustang customization website for the new model year. The popular web tool now lets potential customers build and design their dream Ford Mustang based on the 2013 model year cars — even the high-performance Shelby GT500 version.

Ford first launched the entertaining Mustang customizer last September; since then, one million people have created 4.1 million custom Mustangs. Users get to pick different colors, decals, wheels, and body parts with just a few clicks of a mouse. Once the car is complete, the customizer allows users to pick a unique background for the image, with options including a cloud of burnout smoke, before saving the image as a computer wallpaper or posting it to Facebook. The entire Ford Mustang range is available as a starting point — V-6, V-8-powered GT, Boss 302, and Shelby GT500.

Ford says that a customer could print out their online creation and take it to a dealership. Aside from custom paint colors, every component available on the customizer exists in the Mustang parts bin, and a dealer could potentially custom-build a customer’s dream car. The online configuration, of course, can’t predict the cost or time required for such a custom creation.

The possibilities of the new Mustang customizer were teased earlier this year with a commercial launched for the 2013 Ford Mustang. In the clip, bystanders who saw the new car driving past each imagined how they’d customize the car.

In addition to using the online version, Ford Mustang fans can design their own car via the “Mustang Customizer” app for iPhone, iPad, and Android.
