In an announcement earlier today, Ford released the code name for its new Power Stroke diesel engine: “Scorpion.” The engine will make its debut along with the 2011 Super Duty lineup at the Texas State Fair in September. The 6.7-liter Power Stroke V-8 also is capable of drinking B20 biodiesel (a 20/80 mix of bio and standard diesel fuel).
Ford has parted ways with its previous Power Stroke supplier Navistar (parent company of International) and decided to build the Scorpion in-house. The two have battled in court over warranty and cost issues regarding the previous generation Power Stroke engines.
The official press release claims improvements in torque, horsepower, and fuel economy over the previous Power Stroke diesel. For the first time in a modern production diesel the exhaust gasses exit into the valley of the engine where the turbo sits. The single-sequential turbocharger boosts to 30 psi, 10 psi fewer than the 6.4-liter Power Stroke it replaces.
The Ford engineers were able to shed an impressive 160 pounds off the new powerplant helping to boost fuel economy. Ford is also up to snuff environmentally with the new engine, reducing nitrous oxide and soot emissions by 90 percent. Rumored to be the most expensive engine program in company’s history, you can bet the Scorpion will command an impressive premium on the options list.
