Possibly looking to follow in the footsteps of the $1.1 billion class-action settlement paid by Toyota for unintended acceleration claims, a group of 20 consumers represented by New York-based law firm Grant & Eisenhofer has filed suit against Ford, according to a Reuters report. The plaintiffs allege the automaker failed to install sufficient safety systems in its vehicles equipped with electronic throttles, including the 2004-2010 F-Series trucks, the 2005-2009 Lincoln Town Car, and the 2002-2005 Mercury Cougar.
A spokesman for the law firm say the basis of the suit is to be compensated for economic losses for having over-paid for vehicles that contained defects. No specific injuries or deaths resulting from the allegedly insufficient safety features were mentioned by the firm or the plaintiffs.
Ford responded by saying the vast majority of unintended acceleration incidents are attributed to driver error, with data backed up by studies conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. “NHTSA’s work is far more scientific and trustworthy than work done by personal injury lawyers and their paid experts,” Ford added in a statement in response to the suit.
Ford began installing brake override systems in some of its models starting in 2010. The plaintiffs in the suit come from 14 states. A specific monetary damage amount sought has not yet been determined.
