Ford Motor Company has released its October 2013 sales figures, selling 191,985 vehicles total compared to last year’s 168,456. This amounts to 14 percent year-over-year increase, and a 12.2 percent increase for year-to-date sales. While still a far cry from August 2013’s 221,270 total sales, Ford appears to be climbing the ladder. The company also saw a 15 percent increase in October retail sales, to 142,487 vehicles—the best October retail performance since 2004.
Winner: Ford F-Series, 63,803 units sold, Up 12.9 Percent
Selling over 60,000 vehicles for the sixth straight month, the Ford F-Series remains the workhorse of Ford’s sales. This is the first time since 2006 that the F-Series has topped the 60,000-vehicle mark for six consecutive months. Year-to-date sales show a 19.8 percent increase compared to 2012, as well. The F-Series showed a decent improvement over last month’s sales, up from 60,456 vehicles.
Winner: Ford Fusion, 21,740 units sold, Up 71.3 Percent
While 71.3 percent sounds dramatic, it’s important to remember that last October’s sluggish 12,690 units sold was largely due to a transition from 2012 to 2013 Fusion models. Nonetheless, the Ford Fusion posted best-ever October sales this year, helping raise year-to-date sales to 248,033, a 19.9 percent compared to those of 2012. Although the Ford Escape crossover continues to sell well in Ford’s second-place slot, posting 250,543 units sold so far this year, the popular Fusion is hot on its heels. It appears that Ford is keeping up with demand well thanks to added capacity at the Flat Rock plant, as sales improved nicely from last month’s 19,972 units sold. Fiesta sales went up 8.7 percent, a record 4,337 for October. That helped contribute to a 30.5 percent year-to-date increase.
Considering there are plenty of pony-car fans out there biding their time until the 2015 Ford Mustang hits showrooms, the Ford Mustang put up some impressive numbers this month, with 6,918 vehicles sold. Last month, Ford only sold off 4,429 Mustangs. The Ford Taurus showed improvement as well, selling 5,032 vehicles in October; this solid performance brought year-to-date sales to 59,967, which is a 9.5 percent hike compared to 2012 sales.
Wait and See: Lincoln MKZ, 2,909 units sold. Up 80.2 Percent
If this is beginning to sound like déjà-vu, it is because the structure of Ford Motor Company’s sales breakdown is largely unchanged compared to last month. Again, the Lincoln MKZ sold just under 3,000 units, posting a hair-thin improvement over September’s 2,876 vehicles. Year-to-date sales are up 6.4 percent. Still, these numbers simply pale in comparison to the Fusion’s 21,740 vehicles sold. Still, the MKZ and the Lincoln Navigator, which sold 954 units, are really the only thing keeping Lincoln afloat. Year-to-date sales are down 3 percent, although that is 2.1 percent better than as of September. It is also worth noting that the Lincoln brand is up 38.4 percent for this month. Every model except for the Lincoln MKT crossover saw its sales increase — just not by enough to make a serious difference.
Loser: Ford Focus, 15,108 units sold, Down 17.5 Percent
The Ford Focus continues to slow down in sales. Down from September’s 16,733 units sold, October’s unremarkable performance brings year-to-date sales to 203,762. That’s a .6 percent drop from 2012’s numbers. The rival Chevrolet Cruze also dropped by 15.9 percent this October, but managed to eke out more sales than the Focus, totaling 16,087 units.
