Ford Ready To Fix Recalled 2013 Fusion, 2013 Escape Models

Ford has announced that it has a fix for models of the 2013 Fusion sedan and 2013 Escape crossover equipped with 1.6-liter turbo-four engines. The vehicles were recalled because the EcoBoost engine could overheat and catch fire due to a flaw in its cooling system.

The fix is a software update that will allow the cars’ computers to better cope with engine overheating conditions. Ford says that the cars’ original programming couldn’t deal with a loss of coolant-system pressure during a “unique overheating condition that could occur under unique operating conditions.” Ford says the recall takes less than a day at a Ford dealership, although the dealer may need the car for longer than a day depending on workload. The recall starts next week.

At the end of November, Ford announced that 73,320 Fusions and 15,833 Escapes equipped with its 1.6-liter EcoBoost engine could unexpectedly overheat. The instrument cluster display would warn of an overheated engine and reduced engine power, and some owners experienced engine fires. Ford encouraged owners to avoid driving the vehicles until a fix was available.

The recall doesn’t affect owners of 2013 Ford Fusion models equipped with hybrid, 2.5-, or 2.0-liter engines; 2013 Ford Escape owners with 2.5- or 2.0-liter engines are also unaffected.

Both of the new Ford models have been recalled for other issues. Ford previously fixed a potential coolant leak, replaced damaged fuel lines that could start a fire, and addressed misplaced carpeting that could have prevented proper brake operation on the 2013 Escape. The 2013 Ford Fusion was recalled for headlights that could become too dim over time.
